Schematic Development on the Extension Remodeling Types of Apartment Building Stocks

In recent years, public interest in aged apartment remodeling has come to rise in Korea with the government’s strict regulation to restrict apartment reconstruction. To meet the rising demands on apartment remodeling, we attempt in this paper to develop an analytical research and schematic application of extension types for domestic apartment building stocks. Our research adopts a typological approach, as Korean apartments have developed in a way that some prevalent standardized patterns are obvious in them. In order to provide an overview of the recent development of apartment remodeling in Korea, we firstly investigate the housing unit plans of apartments in Seoul and classify them into groups to extract the typical configurational patterns of them. Next, we examine apartment remodeling projects developed so far to explore the current trends in practice, and analyze them to extract and structuralize the technical elements used in them for remodeling. From the extracted technical elements, we draw out the four main extension remodeling types from which we develop the schematic models for the selected example plans, which proved to be the most prevalent types of the current domestic apartments in the preliminary survey. From the schematic development of the models, we finally draw out and discuss the technical problems we have to tackle in implementing apartment extension.
